Shaikh of Al-Azhar Mustafa al-Maraghi: Jesus (A.S) Died

The Egyptian Islamic scholar, reformer and rector of Al-Azhar University, Shaikh Ahmad Mustafa al-Maraghi (1881-1945) confirmed in his monumental Tafsir that the Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) has died.

Commenting on the verse of the Qur'an (3:144), Al-Maraghi wrote:

أى إن محمدا ليس إلا بشر قد مضت الرسل قبله فماتوا وقتل بعضهم كزكريا ويحيا, ولم يكتب لأحد منهم الخلد. أفإن مات كما مات موسى وعيسى وغيرهما من النبيين

Translation: “That is – verily Muhammad (peace be upon him) is not except a mortal man. The Messenger in the past before him, they all died, or some of them were killed like Zechariah and Yahia, and eternity was not decreed for a single one of them. If he (Prophet Muhammad) dies like Moses and Jesus died, and other Prophets died...”
